Moss and Lichen are a Roof’s Top Enemy

Lichen is one of the most damaging issues that your roof can face. It’s slow growing but incredibly strong, sending filament roots into the surface of your roof, creating micro-cracks in the paint, eventually finding the bare steel underneath. Colorsteel is fantastic stuff but it can’t stand up to the force of well-established lichen.

Concrete, decramastic-style and tiled roofs have natural cracks and joins. Plants like Lichen and Moss creep into these cracks and open them up further.

Moss and Lichen can also change the roofs natural water flow. Roofs are designed to drain cleanly; even a handful of attached lichen can cause water to pool and run where it shouldn’t.

Moss grows quickly and blocks drainage channels, especially gutters. Unless you have the roof properly treated, tiny fragments of moss can grow back into full mounds.
